velvet ropes
Luxurious crowd control
Velvet ropes are the thick, soft-fabric barriers—typically hung between stanchions—used to control access to exclusive areas: nightclub entrances, VIP sections, museum exhibits.
The phrase has become shorthand for exclusivity itself: getting past the velvet ropes, a velvet-rope crowd.
What lies beyond them is desirable precisely because most people are kept out.
