salt tax
Mineral preservation duty
A salt tax is a government levy on the production, sale, or consumption of salt.
Because salt is essential for human survival and historically difficult to substitute, salt taxes have been imposed by governments throughout history as a reliable revenue source.
The most famous was India's British-imposed salt tax, whose repeal Gandhi demanded in his 1930 Salt March.
Such taxes are considered regressive since they burden the poor disproportionately.
