runrig
Rotated field strips
Runrig is a traditional Scottish system of land cultivation where farmers in a township held scattered strips of arable land rather than consolidated fields.
The strips were periodically redistributed among tenants to ensure fairness, since soil quality varied.
The system was common in the Scottish Highlands and Ireland before agricultural reforms consolidated holdings: The old runrig system meant no farmer could improve his own land. (Capitalized Runrig is the Scottish rock band.)
