running stitches

Quick, loose sewing

Running stitches are the simplest form of hand sewing—a single thread passing in and out of fabric at regular intervals, creating a dashed line of visible stitches.

The technique is quick but not especially strong, used for basting, gathering, or temporary seams: She secured the hem with running stitches before machine sewing.
