rub up

British memory refresher

To rub up is to polish or refresh something by rubbing: rub up the silverware before dinner.

In British English, to rub up on a subject is to review or brush up on it: I should rub up on my French before the trip.

To rub someone up the wrong way is to irritate them, like stroking fur against its natural direction.
