appease

Satisfy through concessions

To appease is to calm or pacify someone by giving them what they want, often at the cost of principle.

You might appease a crying child with candy or appease an angry customer with a refund.

The word carries a whiff of capitulation—appeasement of aggressors rarely ends well: Chamberlain's attempt to appease Hitler failed catastrophically.

To appease hunger or curiosity is simply to satisfy it.
