ropewalk

Long fiber-twisting lane

A ropewalk is a long, narrow building or outdoor path where rope is manufactured by twisting fibers together while walking backward.

The process required considerable length—ropewalks often stretched several hundred feet—to allow the strands to be twisted evenly.

The term now also refers to any elongated pathway or alley, regardless of its original purpose.
