root cap
Growth point protector
A root cap is a protective layer of cells covering the tip of a plant root.
As the root pushes through soil, the cap shields the delicate growing tissue behind it, secreting lubricating substances to ease passage.
The outer cells are continuously worn away and replaced from within, sacrificing themselves so the root can advance.
