rethatching

Replacing dried reeds

Rethatching is the process of replacing or repairing a thatched roof—one made of straw, reeds, or similar plant materials.

Traditional thatched roofs require periodic rethatching as the organic material weathers and decays: The cottage needed rethatching every twenty years.

The term applies both to complete replacement and to patching worn sections.
