nervous exhaustion
Stress-induced weariness
Nervous exhaustion is a state of extreme mental and physical fatigue brought on by prolonged stress, anxiety, or overwork.
The term was common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a quasi-medical diagnosis, often applied to women and sometimes called neurasthenia.
Today it sounds dated but remains understood: After months of caregiving, she collapsed from nervous exhaustion.
