requiem mass
Catholic death service
A requiem mass is a Catholic funeral liturgy offered for the repose of a deceased person's soul.
The term comes from the opening prayer's first word in Latin, meaning "rest." The service includes prayers, readings, and traditionally the singing of the Dies Irae sequence describing the Day of Judgment: The requiem mass was held three days after her death. (Capitalized Requiem Mass refers to the same service in formal or liturgical contexts.)
