religious annulment
Church-voided marriage
A religious annulment is a formal declaration by a religious authority that a marriage was never valid in the eyes of the faith, distinguishing it from divorce, which ends a valid marriage.
In Catholic canon law, an annulment may be granted when conditions for a valid marriage were not met—such as lack of consent, deception, or inability to fulfill marital obligations.
Unlike civil divorce, a religious annulment allows remarriage within the church.
After her divorce, she sought a religious annulment so she could marry again in the Catholic Church.
