religious marriage
Church-sanctioned union
A religious marriage is a union solemnized according to the rites of a faith tradition, as distinguished from a civil marriage performed by a government official.
Some couples have both: They had a civil ceremony at the courthouse, then a religious marriage at their church.
In many jurisdictions, clergy are authorized to perform legally binding marriages, making the religious and civil functions simultaneous.
