regional rail

Suburban train system

Regional rail is a passenger train service connecting a city center to its surrounding suburbs and nearby towns, covering longer distances than urban metro or subway systems.

Stations are typically farther apart, and trains run less frequently than rapid transit.

In the U.S., examples include Metra in Chicago and SEPTA in Philadelphia: I take regional rail from the suburbs into the city for work.
