red onions
Salad's purple layers
Red onions are a variety of onion with purplish-red skin and white flesh streaked with red.
They have a milder, slightly sweeter flavor than yellow onions and are often eaten raw in salads, sandwiches, and salsas.
The color fades when cooked, so they're preferred for dishes where their appearance matters: pickled red onions, red onion rings on a burger.
