recoinage
Replacing old money
Recoinage is the process of withdrawing currency from circulation and issuing new coins in its place—typically to update designs, restore worn coinage, or reform monetary standards.
Historically, governments undertook recoinage to address debasement or standardize currency: The Great Recoinage of 1696 replaced clipped and worn silver coins.
The term can extend figuratively to any fundamental reformulation of something previously established.
