reattribute
Assign new authorship
To reattribute is to assign something—credit, blame, authorship, cause—to a different source than previously believed.
Art historians reattribute paintings when evidence suggests a different artist: The portrait was reattributed from Rembrandt to a student in his workshop.
In psychology, cognitive reattribution involves changing how you interpret the cause of an event or feeling: She learned to reattribute her anxiety to caffeine rather than impending doom.
