ready aim fire

Marksman's three commands

Ready aim fire is a command sequence for shooting, traditionally given to firing squads or rifle lines: ready your weapon, take aim, fire.

The phrase has become shorthand for any methodical preparation before action.

More often it appears inverted—ready fire aim—to describe acting impulsively without proper planning: The company's ready-fire-aim approach to product launches led to predictable disasters.
