quartersaw

Mill perpendicular method

Quartersaw is a method of cutting lumber where logs are sliced radially, perpendicular to the growth rings, rather than straight through.

This technique produces boards with a distinctive straight grain pattern and greater dimensional stability—they warp and shrink less than flat-sawn wood.

Quartersawn lumber is prized for furniture, flooring, and musical instruments, though it yields less usable wood per log and costs more.

The guitar's quartersawn neck resists humidity changes.
