quarter section
160 agricultural acres
A quarter section is 160 acres of land—one quarter of a square mile.
The term comes from the U.S.
Public Land Survey System, which divided western territories into one-mile-square sections.
Quarter sections became the standard unit for homestead claims: The family farmed their quarter section for three generations.
The term remains common in rural areas of the American West and Canada.
