punch up

Make more vivid

Punch up means to make something more lively, forceful, or engaging—usually writing, dialogue, or a presentation: The script needed someone to punch up the jokes.

In comedy, a punch-up writer adds gags to sharpen existing material.

Separately, a punch-up is British slang for a fistfight: A punch-up broke out in the pub.
