pump-fake
Shot that isn't
A pump-fake is a deceptive motion in sports, especially basketball, where a player mimics the beginning of a shot or pass to draw a defender out of position, then holds the ball and makes a different move.
The term extends to any feint or false start meant to mislead: He pump-faked interest in the job to leverage a better offer elsewhere.
