puff adder
Thick venomous snake
A puff adder is a large, venomous African snake that inflates its body and hisses loudly when threatened—hence the name.
It's responsible for more snakebite fatalities in Africa than any other species, owing to its wide range, excellent camouflage, and habit of lying still rather than fleeing.
The name also applies to the harmless North American hognose snake, which mimics dangerous snakes by puffing up and hissing.
