propylthiouracil
Antithyroid medication option
Propylthiouracil is a medication used to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much hormone.
It works by blocking the thyroid's ability to produce hormones and by reducing the conversion of one thyroid hormone to another.
The drug is often abbreviated PTU in medical contexts and is sometimes preferred over similar medications during early pregnancy.
The doctor prescribed propylthiouracil to control her overactive thyroid.
