premortal

Prior to life

Premortal means existing or occurring before mortal life.

The term appears primarily in Latter-day Saint theology, which holds that human spirits existed in a premortal realm before being born into physical bodies: We knew each other in the premortal existence.

Outside religious contexts, the word is rare, occasionally appearing in philosophical discussions of the soul.
