precolonialism
Pre-conquest historical period
Precolonialism refers to the period or conditions existing before colonial rule was established in a region.
The term appears in academic discussions of African, Asian, and American societies as they existed prior to European conquest and administration: precolonialism trade networks, precolonialism political structures.
It frames indigenous histories on their own terms rather than as mere precursors to colonization.
