power balance
Authority among parties
Power balance refers to the relative distribution of influence, control, or strength between competing parties—nations, factions, or individuals.
In international relations, maintaining a power balance prevents any single state from dominating others.
The term applies to any situation where parties check each other's authority: The power balance in their marriage shifted when she got the promotion.
Also called balance of power.
