policy wonks
Political detail enthusiasts
Policy wonks are people deeply immersed in the details of public policy—the specifics of legislation, regulations, and government programs.
The term suggests expertise but also obsessive interest in material others find dry: The policy wonks were thrilled by the new healthcare proposal.
Wonk implies intellectual engagement without the prestige of "expert"—someone who genuinely enjoys reading white papers and budget analyses.
