polar bear swim
Icy water tradition
A polar bear swim is an organized event, typically held on New Year's Day or another winter date, in which participants plunge into frigid outdoor water, usually a lake, river, or ocean.
The name references the polar bear's comfort in icy waters, which humans decidedly do not share.
These events often raise money for charity and draw crowds of spectators who wisely remain on shore.
We do a polar bear swim every January first at the lake.
