marine reserves
Protected sea areas
Marine reserves are areas of ocean where fishing and other extractive activities are restricted or prohibited to protect ecosystems.
They function as underwater parks, allowing fish populations and habitats to recover: The marine reserve off the coast has seen fish stocks triple since its establishment.
Also called marine protected areas or no-take zones, they serve both conservation and fisheries management goals.
