photostats

Old copying method

Photostats are copies made by an early photographic duplicating process, or the machines that produced them.

Before modern photocopiers, a photostat machine photographed documents directly onto sensitized paper, creating a negative image (white text on black) or a positive copy.

The term now applies loosely to any photocopy: I need photostats of these receipts.

To photostat is to copy by this or similar means.
