pepperboxes

Early rotating firearms

Pepperboxes is the plural of pepperbox, a type of early repeating firearm with multiple rotating barrels, each containing a single shot.

The design preceded the revolver, which uses a single barrel with a rotating cylinder.

The term also refers to pepper shakers—small containers with perforated tops for dispensing ground pepper at the table.
