penny-farthings

Big-wheeled cycles

Penny-farthings are early bicycles with a very large front wheel and a small rear wheel—the rider sat high above the front axle.

The name comes from two British coins of vastly different sizes.

Popular in the 1870s and 1880s, they were replaced by the safer chain-driven "safety bicycle" with equal-sized wheels.
