pedologist

Studies earth's skin

A pedologist is a scientist who studies soils—their formation, classification, and distribution across landscapes.

The field, called pedology, examines how climate, organisms, topography, and parent material interact over time to create different soil types.

Pedologists work in agriculture, environmental science, and land management.

The term shares its Greek root with pediatrician (both from *pais*, child), but pedology in the soil sense derives from *pedon* (ground), not *paidos* (of a child).
