pea-souper

Thick London fog

A pea-souper is a thick, yellowish fog, especially the coal-smoke fogs that plagued London and other industrial cities through the mid-20th century.

The name comes from the fog's resemblance to pea soup in color and density.

The term is chiefly British and now somewhat dated, as clean air legislation eliminated the worst smogs: Visibility dropped to nothing in the pea-souper.
