path finding
Calculating optimal routes
Path finding is the process of determining a route between two points, especially in computing and video games where algorithms calculate how characters or objects navigate around obstacles.
The term applies both to automated systems—The game's path finding kept NPCs from walking through walls—and to real-world navigation.
