maypop

Vine fruit, southeast

Maypop is a passion fruit vine native to the southeastern United States, or its egg-sized yellow fruit.

The name may come from the popping sound the hollow fruit makes when stepped on.

The plant produces striking purple-and-white flowers and edible fruit with a tart, tropical flavor: We found maypops growing wild along the fence line.
