parentification

Kids raising themselves

Parentification is a family dynamic in which a child takes on responsibilities typically belonging to a parent—managing household tasks, caring for siblings, or providing emotional support to adults.

The term comes from psychology and usually carries negative connotations, suggesting the child's developmental needs are neglected: Growing up with an alcoholic father forced her into parentification at age ten.
