paralanguage
Beyond the words
Paralanguage refers to the vocal elements of communication that accompany speech but aren't the words themselves—things like tone, pitch, volume, speed, pauses, and sounds like sighs or laughter.
These features convey meaning beyond the literal words: a flat okay signals reluctance while an enthusiastic one shows agreement.
Paralanguage is distinct from body language, which involves physical gestures rather than vocal qualities.
