paper theater
Illustrated narrative stage
Paper theater is a miniature stage made of printed paper or cardboard sheets, popular in the 19th century as home entertainment.
Audiences—usually children—would assemble the proscenium, scenery, and character figures, then perform plays by sliding the figures on and off stage: We spent the afternoon putting on a paper theater production of Cinderella.
Also called toy theater.
