paper-trail

Evidence through documents

A paper trail is documentation that records a sequence of events or transactions, creating evidence of what occurred.

The term comes from physical records but now includes digital files: The accountant kept a paper trail of every expense.

Investigators follow paper trails to trace money, decisions, or responsibility.

To leave a paper trail is to create traceable records—sometimes deliberately for protection, sometimes carelessly when trying to hide something.
