pack animals

Cargo-carrying creatures

Pack animals are animals used to carry loads on their backs, typically horses, mules, donkeys, llamas, or camels.

The term extends to people who carry heavy burdens: We loaded up like pack animals for the camping trip.

In a different sense, pack animals are species that naturally live and travel in groups—wolves, dogs, elephants—as opposed to solitary creatures.
