new penny

Shiny copper piece

A new penny is the British one-pence coin introduced in 1971 when the UK decimalized its currency, replacing the old system of pounds, shillings, and pence.

The term distinguished it from the pre-decimal penny, which was worth 1/240 of a pound rather than 1/100.

The "new" label faded from use as the decimal system became standard.
