oxidative addition
Metal gains ligands
Oxidative addition is a reaction in organometallic chemistry where a metal center gains both electrons and new ligands, increasing its oxidation state.
A molecule like hydrogen or a carbon-halogen bond breaks apart, with both fragments attaching to the metal: The palladium catalyst undergoes oxidative addition with the aryl bromide.
The reverse process is reductive elimination.
Central to cross-coupling reactions in pharmaceutical synthesis.
