overstruck

Coined over another

Overstruck describes a coin or medal stamped over an existing piece, with traces of the original design sometimes visible beneath the new impression.

Mints historically overstruck coins to save metal or repurpose obsolete currency: The Roman denarius was overstruck with a new emperor's portrait.

The term also applies to typewriter characters struck on top of each other.
