overpumping
Draining too fast
Overpumping is extracting water from a well or aquifer faster than it can naturally replenish.
The practice leads to declining water tables, land subsidence, and saltwater intrusion in coastal areas: Years of overpumping have depleted the aquifer.
The term applies similarly to other contexts where pumping exceeds sustainable limits.
