overdiagnosed

Given unwarranted diagnosis

Overdiagnosed describes a condition identified in someone who would never have developed symptoms or problems from it—a diagnosis that does more harm than good.

The term appears most often in medical contexts where screening detects abnormalities that wouldn't have affected the patient's health: Many early-stage prostate cancers are overdiagnosed, leading to unnecessary treatment.

It can also describe conditions whose prevalence has expanded through broadened criteria: ADHD may be overdiagnosed in active young boys.
