outstations

Distant branch locations

Outstations are remote branches or posts of an organization, typically at a distance from headquarters.

The term appears most often in contexts involving colonial administration, mining operations, or radio communications, where personnel work at locations far from the main base: He spent three years at an outstation in the Northern Territory.

In Australian usage especially, outstations can refer to small Indigenous communities on traditional lands.
