An outer sleeve is a protective covering that fits over something else, typically a secondary layer surrounding an inner component.
In music packaging, it's the cardboard jacket housing a vinyl record or the slipcase over a CD case.
In clothing and manufacturing, it refers to the visible exterior layer of a sleeve: The outer sleeve shows wear while the lining remains intact.
