orientalists

Students of Asia

Orientalists are scholars who study the languages, cultures, histories, and religions of Asia and the Middle East—traditionally called "the Orient" in Western discourse.

The term now carries critical weight: Edward Said's influential critique characterized Orientalism as a Western framework that exoticized and misrepresented Eastern societies, often serving colonial interests.

Nineteenth-century orientalists translated Sanskrit texts and Persian poetry.

The word can describe either serious academic specialists or those perpetuating romanticized, patronizing views of Eastern cultures.
